Cadiz Coastline- Sand Dune by Thanyathorn Mateekusontan

I focus on the coastal condition of Cadiz, especially on Sand Dunes.
So i will first introduce the overall general information and the coastal conditions of Spain. Then i will discuss about Sand dunes; what they are, what are their problems, and how it effect Spanish coast. Then i will discuss on specific main sites of Cadiz coastline that is effected by Sand dunes.

Coastline of spain:
The coastline of Spain is 7,883 km long, population of 46,439,864 people. and 60 percent of the people concentrates on the coastline.

There are many types of coast:
  • coastal lowlands associated with bays, Deltas, River mouth
  • wetlands and lagoons
  • beaches
  • cliffs
  • and ports

The thing that first interested me is that the Spanish coastline has been developing and speedily transforming from occupied coastline into urbanised occupations with new developments including buildings and concretes.
To support that, There are a lot of black-spots where there are problems with mostly: dumping wastewater, threats and constructions of fold courses, resorts,  and residents. Moreover, erosions, accretions and dunes are few of the natural changes that has been affecting the life, tourism and occupations along the coastline.

However, for this project i gave my interests mainly on the coastal sand dunes, where it occurs throughout the whole cadiz coastline.

So, what is a sand dune?
  • a  sand dune is a mount, hill  of sand that lies behind parts of the beach.
  • they are formed over many years when windblown sand is trapped by beach grass
  • Dune grasses anchor the dunes with their roots, holding them temporarily in place.

There are sand dunes all alone the coast of Spain especially on the south west atlantic side of country.

Why preserve sand dunes?
  • protect inland areas from  (storms, hurricanes, flood-water, wind and wave, damage)
  • habitats for coastal plants
  • homes to species of plants, animals and birds even

Threats to destructions of sand dune:

- people occupations, constructions, vehicles access, unplanned infrastructure, tourism.
- tourism is one of the main reasons of damaged sand dune, since from the 60s & 70s until 1988, there are tourist boom in Spain and the sand dunes are totally unprotected and damaged.

The solutions that have been made are boardwalks, beach access, and closure of some areas. But not good spread and efficient enough

For my proposal:

I wish to design a new typology of architecture that could hopefully be implemented in this context to accommodate coastal changes in a dynamic way.
